More information

The coronation of a British monarch is a highly ceremonial and symbolic event that marks the formal investiture of the monarch with regal power and authority. The ceremony is usually held in Westminster Abbey, London, and is attended by many dignitaries, including members of the royal family, government officials, and foreign diplomats.

The ceremony usually begins with the monarch's procession from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Abbey, where they are greeted by the Archbishop of Canterbury, who leads the ceremony. The monarch then takes an oath to uphold the laws and customs of the realm and to govern justly.

The coronation also involves the anointing of the monarch with holy oil, the presentation of various symbols of regal authority, such as the orb and sceptre, and the crowning of the monarch with the St. Edward's Crown.

To continue with traditional King Charles III will be crowned at Westminster Abbey, on the 6th May 2023, which falls less than a month before the 70th anniversary of the crowning of Queen Elizabeth II. The Queen Consort will be crowned alongside her husband. Although the exact details of are being quite closely guarded, we do know that it will still be rooted in long-standing traditions, but it will also reflect the monarch’s role today and looks towards the future.
