Ordering cakes online without the last-minute scramble

Some people begin planning a birthday weeks ahead.

Some people begin planning a birthday weeks ahead. Others suddenly remember that the celebration involves feeding people, preferably with cake. Wherever you sit on that scale, ordering cakes online can make the whole thing feel a little more manageable.

You choose the flavour and size, check the dietary details, enter the delivery address and select an available date. We take care of the baking and packing. The useful part is knowing what to look for before you click, especially when the cake has a particular table, person or party to reach.

Start with how you will serve it

Before choosing between chocolate and Victoria sponge, think about the gathering. Are you bringing out a cake after a family meal, serving generous slices at an afternoon party, or sending something to one person who lives far away?

Our whole cakes suit the familiar cake-cutting moment. Most come in medium sizes serving ten to twelve or large sizes serving eighteen to twenty, though you should check the individual product for its exact serving guide. Think about the appetite of your guests too; a birthday tea and a slice after a three-course dinner are quite different jobs.

For a gathering with several favourites, explore our sharing cakes. Individual Baby Sponges are handy when people will be helping themselves, while a Cake Card makes a smaller gift with a personal message.

Choose a flavour that feels like them

The most impressive cake on the page is not always the right one for the person receiving it. If they have ordered coffee cake for twenty years, there is something rather lovely about remembering that.

A Victoria sponge suits someone who loves a familiar favourite. Chocolate makes sense for the person who always scans a dessert menu for it, while lemon or red velvet can bring something different to the table. Read the flavour description as well as looking at the photograph: the filling and topping are part of the cake's personality too.

You can narrow the choices through our birthday cake collection, or browse the whole range and let the birthday person's tastes lead the way. A milestone does not require an unfamiliar flavour. Their favourite cake with a few candles is already a good celebration.

Check dietary requirements before ordering

If you are feeding a group, ask about dietary needs early. It is much easier to choose the right cake before the order goes through than to discover a missing detail on the day.

Sponge has gluten-free cakes and vegan cakes, alongside our standard range. Read the ingredients and allergen information for the exact product you choose. Vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free describe different things, so one label will not necessarily cover every guest's requirements.

Find the delivery option for your address

Our UK cake delivery options include standard and express services, with the available dates and charges shown at checkout. Standard delivery requires at least two days' notice. Next-day delivery is available for eligible orders placed before 2pm, provided the delivery date is available for the destination.

We deliver to most UK addresses, with postcode restrictions and different weekend services in some areas. Our cake delivery page is the place to check the details. If you are near Holt in Norfolk, collection is also available; choose the collection option at checkout to see the slots.

For an important celebration, select delivery for the day before. That gives you time to receive the parcel, check everything and let the cake reach room temperature before serving. If it is going to a venue, arrange who will accept and look after it.

Check the total before paying, including delivery and any extras. Seeing the full cost together makes it easier to choose the cake and service that work for your plans, without a surprise at the final step.

Look after the cake once it arrives

Our cakes travel in protective packaging and usually have seven to ten days' shelf life from dispatch, depending on flavour. Follow the best-before date and care instructions supplied with your order.

Keep Sponge cakes covered in an airtight container at room temperature, somewhere cool and dry. Give a cool cake time to soften before slicing, and save the fridge space for something else; refrigeration can dry out our sponges.

Once those practical details are sorted, you can return to the nice decisions. Which candles to add. Who gets the first slice. Whether there will be enough left for tomorrow's tea. We are very much in favour of planning for that last one.
