Louise Cheadle Spills the Tea
There’s something wonderfully reassuring about a proper cup of tea.
It's there when friends arrive unexpectedly. It's there when the news is good. It's there when the day has felt a little too long. And, of course, it's there when the cake comes out.
As a nation, we drink millions of cups every day. But how often do we stop and think about what's actually in them?
That question sits at the heart of Spill Tea, the business founded by tea expert Louise Cheadle and her long-time business partner Sofia.
And after speaking with Louise, it quickly becomes clear that Spill Tea is about much more than making a great brew.
It's about changing the way tea works, from the ground up.
A Lifetime Spent Perfecting Tea
Louise knows tea better than most people know their own kitchen cupboards.
Before launching Spill Tea, she co-founded Teapigs and spent 16 years helping build the brand. Before that, she worked as a tea taster for Tetley, travelling the world and tasting tea at source.
It's the kind of career many tea lovers dream about.
But what those years really gave her was a deep understanding of how tea should taste, how it's grown, and where the industry often falls short.
Over time, two frustrations kept returning.
The first was quality.
Despite Britain's reputation as a nation of tea drinkers, Louise felt many of us had gradually become accustomed to drinking tea that simply wasn't as good as it could be.
The second challenge was even bigger.
Too much of the money, she explained, was being absorbed by middlemen and brokers, leaving farmers with less than they deserved.
For an industry where around 70% of tea is grown by smallholder farmers, that felt like a problem worth solving.
Building Something Better
After working together for 16 years, Louise and Sofia left Teapigs with a simple question:
How can we make tea taste better while making sure farmers are paid fairly?
Spill Tea became their answer.
The tea comes from Rwanda, where rich volcanic soil, regular rainfall and ideal growing conditions help create exceptional flavour.
But it isn't just the landscape that impressed Louise.
Farmers are rewarded for producing high-quality tea, with extra payments available when they achieve the gold-standard "two leaves and a bud" picking method.
Tea is checked, approved and paid for quickly through a digital payment system, helping ensure farmers receive fair and direct compensation.
The result is a supply chain built around quality, consistency and transparency.
And according to Louise, you can taste the difference.
The Reality of Starting Again
Of course, building a new business is never as simple as having a good idea.
Getting tea from Rwanda to the UK hasn't always been straightforward.
There have been shipping delays, packaging challenges and plenty of logistical hurdles along the way.
Early packing operations even took place in Poland before eventually moving to the UK.
But Louise speaks about these obstacles with remarkable honesty and perspective.
Experience helps.
When you've built a business before, challenges feel less like roadblocks and more like part of the journey.
That doesn't mean the doubts disappear completely.
In fact, Louise laughs that there is still at least one moment every week when she and Sofia wonder whether everything will work out.
Thankfully, the belief in the product never wavers.
The tea is excellent. The reviews are strong. The challenge now is simply helping more people discover it.
The Reviews That Make It Worthwhile
One of the most rewarding parts of running Spill Tea is staying close to customers.
Unlike many larger brands, Louise and Sofia still pack many of the online orders themselves.
That means they read every review. Every comment. Every piece of feedback.And sometimes those messages really stick.
One review in particular has stayed with Louise:
"This tea has changed my life."
That's not the kind of feedback you forget.
Creating a Connection With Farmers
One of the most charming parts of the Spill Tea story is the way customers are invited into it.
Every order includes a postcard, giving customers the opportunity to write a message directly to the farmers who grow the tea.
At first, Louise and Sofia weren't sure if anyone would actually take part.
But they did. And they still do. When the pair visit Rwanda, usually every six months, they bring those handwritten messages with them.
It's a simple gesture, but one that creates a genuine connection between the people growing the tea and the people enjoying it.
In a world where supply chains often feel invisible, that's something rather special.
Growing One Cup at a Time
That sense of community runs throughout the entire business.
Early focus groups consisted of friends and family gathered around kitchen tables.
Today, loyal subscribers help shape future products, packaging decisions and new flavour ideas.
Customers regularly test samples, share feedback and help guide the direction of the brand.
It's growth powered by conversations rather than corporate boardrooms.
And there's plenty still to come.
Louise hopes to expand the range further, exploring blends such as Earl Grey with bergamot, alongside green tea sourced from neighbouring farms already producing exceptional leaves.
Sustainability Isn't an Afterthought
At its core, Spill Tea is about doing things better.
Better tea. Better sourcing. Better packaging. Better outcomes for farmers.
The tea bags are compostable, the paper packaging is fully recyclable, and unnecessary plastic has been removed wherever possible.
But what stands out most is that sustainability and ethics aren't marketing features added later.
They're built directly into the business model.
From day one.
The Perfect Tea-and-Cake Pairing
While coffee may now be challenging tea's place as Britain's favourite hot drink, Louise is quietly determined to remind people what a truly great cup of tea can taste like.
And naturally, we couldn't finish the conversation without asking the important question:
What cake pairs best with a great brew?
Louise didn't hesitate Carrot Cake. A choice we fully support.
Although we'd happily make room for a slice of Victoria Sponge Cake, a Strawberries & Cream Cake, or even a classic Birthday Cake too. After all, tea and cake have always been one of Britain's greatest partnerships.
And judging by what Louise and Sofia are building at Spill Tea, tea's future is looking pretty bright.
