The Great British Postcard: A Little Slice of Summer Nostalgia

Before smartphones and holiday photo dumps, postcards were the way we shared our adventures.

There are some things that instantly transport you to a British summer. The smell of salty sea air. The sound of seagulls (whether you invited them or not). A cone of chips wrapped in paper. Colourful beach huts lined up along the promenade.

And, of course, a postcard dropping through the letterbox.

Before smartphones and holiday photo dumps, postcards were the way we shared our adventures. A quick note scribbled between ice creams and donkey rides, a promise that we were having a lovely time, usually finished with, "Wish you were here!"

There was something wonderfully simple about it.

The joy of sending a little happiness

Receiving a postcard always felt like a surprise.

Maybe it had travelled hundreds of miles from Cornwall or the Isle of Wight. Maybe it had been carefully chosen because it featured your favourite seaside town. Whatever was written on the back, it was never really about the words.

It was someone taking a moment to say, "I'm thinking of you."

We think there's something rather lovely about that.

Why nostalgia tastes so sweet

British seaside holidays have changed over the years, but somehow, they've stayed exactly the same. We're still building sandcastles. Still eating ice cream before it melts. Still wandering along piers with a stick of rock in one hand and fish and chips in the other.

And somehow, cake always finds its way into the day too. Whether it's packed into a picnic basket, enjoyed with a pot of tea after a windswept walk, or shared around the table in a holiday cottage, it's part of those little moments that become the memories we look back on.

It's no surprise that some of our favourite summer collections are inspired by those classic seaside scenes. Colourful beach huts, cheerful circus tents and pocket-sized Baby Sponges all capture a little of that carefree holiday feeling.

Bringing back the handwritten message

These days, it's easy to send a text or a photo in seconds.

But there's something special about a handwritten note.

It feels more thoughtful. More personal. More lasting.

That's exactly why we love our Cake Cards.

Like a postcard, they carry a message from someone who's thinking of you. Unlike a postcard, though, they come with an added bonus... Cake. Because if we're reinventing a British tradition, we think it's only right to make it a little more delicious.

Here's to the great British summer

Whether you're heading to the coast this year, staying closer to home or simply enjoying a slice of cake in the garden, we hope you find time for the little things that make summer special.

Send a card.

Share some cake.

Make a few memories.

After all, the best souvenirs aren't always the ones you bring home from the gift shop. Sometimes they're the stories, the laughter and the people you shared them with.

And maybe... just maybe... a slice of cake enjoyed beside the seaside.
