National Rocky Road Day is celebrated every year on the 2nd of June. It is actually to recognise the ice-cream flavour, as opposed to what a lot of us would have thought, which is the dessert square we are probably more accustomed to.
An interesting fact about the rocky road dessert, it was actually first created in Australia in 1853. It came about when entrepreneurs took spoiled confectionary items (spoiled due to the long journey from Europe), and mixed them with nuts and some low-quality chocolate to try and recover them instead of throwing them away. And it worked, and produced something amazing.
The name comes from the rocky road that travellers use to access the goldfields. This is because the dessert had the look of a rather bumpy road filled with rocks and potholes, it made a lot of sense so the name stuck.
One thing we know for sure, is that this chocolate dessert mixed with biscuits, fruit, and marshmallows is delicious. And it should be celebrated in whatever form it comes in, as it never fails to put a smile on our face. We love it so much that we put our own twist on it and turned it into a scrumptious cake.
