National Vegetarian Week 2022

It’s time to talk veggies!

From the 16th – 22nd May 2022 it’s National Vegetarian Week! National Vegetarian Week highlights the benefits of a vegetarian diet, getting more vegetables into our meals and taking out the meat and most animal products from our dishes. We all know how important vegetables are in our diet so, it’s good to use the week to try being vegetarian.

Some people who aren’t usually vegetarian, or even those who are, might be a little bit wary of knowing which foods are suitable. This is because there can be hidden ingredients that we don’t always consider, such as gelatine or rennet. Rennet is most commonly found in hard cheeses, while gelatine can be found in many sweets such as jelly sweets or marshmallows (although there are vegetarian options out there).

There's also some confusion around butter, with many wondering, is butter vegetarian. If you are a lacto-ovo-vegetarian then yes it is. These vegetarians follow a diet that includes eggs, milk, and other dairy products, and as butter is made from milk it is considered vegetarian.

But now you know some of the things to be mindful of if you are thinking about trying a serious vegetarian diet for National Vegetarian Week. And if you’re looking for something sweet and vegetarian to celebrate with during or at the end of the week, we have you covered. Most of our cakes are suitable for vegetarians, with the exception of our Rocky Road cake (as it has marshmallows on top).

Here are just a few of the cakes that are suitable for vegetarians:

Zucchini and Lime Cake - Our three layered Zucchini and Lime Cake is bursting with flavour - the zingy lime combined with the salty, crunchy pistachios and the subtle flavour and texture of courgette is a match made in heaven. This summery cake is perfect for BBQ's, picnics and garden parties!

Chocolate and Caramel Cake - This yummy sponge cake is flavoured with chocolate and caramel creating a marbled effect. It is sandwiched together with a generous double layer of buttercream - chocolate buttercream on the bottom and caramel buttercream on top. It is finished off with more chocolate buttercream on top, a gorgeous drizzle of chocolate, and a sprinkle of crushed salted butter pieces.

Speculoos Biscoff Cake – This Belgian-style biscoff cake is full of sugar and spice and all things nice! A comforting and warming sponge with a deep caramel flavour and hints of cinnamon and other spices. The sponge is held together with a thick layer of buttercream which is infused with biscoff - a caramelised biscuit spread. More of the biscoff buttercream is spread over the top and then covered with a generous biscoff crumb. This Speculoos Biscoff Cake is not one to be missed!

Apple Crumble Cake - Real apple pieces, juicy sultanas, cinnamon and free range eggs make a wonderfully light and tasty sponge. Real butter and natural vanilla flavouring create a luscious buttercream with crumble on top.

Vegan Chocolate Caramel Fudge Cake - Our Vegan Chocolate Caramel Fudge Cake has a deliciously moist chocolate sponge which is sandwiched together with lashings of caramel flavoured buttercream and chunks of vegan vanilla fudge. On top you will find more caramel buttercream finished off with more chunks of delicious salted caramel fudge and a sprinkling of cocoa nibs. Fudge, caramel and chocolate are a match made in heaven!
