Cake for Charity

Have your cake and feel good about it

We all love a slice of cake, but sometimes we do feel a little guilty about it because cake is such an indulgent treat. Well, what if we told you that there’s a way to have a guilt-free slice of cake? We’re not talking calories, unfortunately, but you will feel good eating a slice of our latest addition.

We recently launched our new Honey and Plum cake (also available as gluten-free), here’s a bit more about it:

Honey and Plum cake - This tantalizing Honey and Plum cake is overflowing with sweet, juicy plum chunks and filled with a sweet honey buttercream and plum jam. To top it off, a crunchy honeycomb sprinkle brings it to the next level!

I know what you’re thinking, I haven’t read anything to tell me why I don’t have to feel guilty about eating a slice. We’ll get to that. Let us give you a little bit of background behind our unusual new flavour.

In the run up to the coronation of King Charles III, we ran a competition to create a new cake which we would launch on our website to be sold to our customers. On top of that we asked entrants to pick a charity, as we are donating 20% of the proceeds with each cake sold to the charity of their choice.

We had lots of fabulous entries, some delicious flavours, and some very deserving charities to choose from. There was a lot of deliberation, but we narrowed it down to a few different cakes and we did a taste testing session to try them before making our final decision. In the end Honey and Plum was the clear winner for us, and there’s a fabulous story behind the winner’s entry.

Jenni Selby was the brains behind this fabulous cake suggestion! Jenni was inspired to enter the competition as she loves making cakes, even though she says, ''I'm actually not very good at making cakes''; however, Sponge would disagree.

As it was the coronation competition, Jenni wanted to make sure that her cake was relevant to the King, and chose plum as the star of the cake, as she knows that King Charles III starts every morning with a plum. Hence, the inspiration behind her honey and plum cake.

Jenni decided to choose The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. In honour of her father-in-law, who was treated there for prostate cancer.

As we mentioned above with each cake sold, 20% of the proceeds will be donated directly to The Royal Marsden to go towards helping to ensure their nurses, doctors and research teams can provide the very best care and develop life-saving treatments used here in the UK and around the world.

“We are so grateful to Sponge and Jenni for choosing to fundraise for The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity. This generous support will help us to fund state-of-the-art equipment, the very best patient environments and groundbreaking research to help transform the lives of cancer patients at The Royal Marsden and beyond.”

Amy Mullins, Head of Community Fundraising at The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity

And as a portion of the proceeds go to charity, you won’t feel guilty about enjoying a slice or two of this scrumptious cake. But you’ll have to be quick to get your hands on one of these, we have only made a limited number and they’re selling like hot cakes!
