Cards that give you more
People have been sending greeting cards since the 19th century when printing technologies became more accessible and it became easier to mass produce products. The most notable event that we send cards for is birthdays, everyone has one each year, so it is the most popular occasion to mark.
Commercial card shops have been around longer than we think, most of us would assume that card shops have only really been present since the 20th century. However, the first recorded greeting card shop in the United Kingdom is thought to have appeared in the earl 19th century.
Sir Henry Cole is often credited with popularising the modern greeting card. He was a British civil servant and inventor, and in 1843, he commissioned the design of a card with the message “A Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to You” to be sent to friends and family.
The act of the tradition of exchanging written greetings for special occasions predates that specific card however. People were instead exchanging handwritten letters and notes to convey well wishes for centuries prior to the invention of that. The practice of sending printed greetings cards with pre-written messages became more accessible for everyone with the advancements in printing technology, and the establishment of the postal delivery system.
In the 19th century the greeting card industry steadily grew, and it continues to be a popular form of communication for various special occasions in the United Kingdom and around the world. Although, now there is a new challenge that companies are facing, how do you make a traditional greetings card more interesting?
