Easter has been celebrated for centuries, there’s a longer history of Easter than what we think. As a modern society, we think of Easter as only being linked to the death of Jesus Christ, but it dates back a lot longer than that.
The origins of Easter can be traced back to the Jewish holiday of Passover, which commemorates the Israelites' liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt. According to the Bible, Jesus was crucified during the time of Passover, and his resurrection occurred on the third day after his death.
The first Christians celebrated Easter as a single day, but over time, it evolved into a season of 50 days known as Eastertide or the Easter Season. This period begins with Easter Sunday, which falls on the first Sunday after the first full moon following the spring equinox.
In the early Christian church, Easter was the most important holiday, and it was celebrated with great solemnity and joy. As Christianity spread throughout the world, Easter became a cultural as well as a religious holiday. Many of the customs associated with Easter, such as the Easter bunny and Easter eggs, have pagan origins and were later incorporated into Christian celebrations.
Today, many of us still celebrate Easter, and we often mark the occasion with a chocolate egg, and/or an Easter egg hunt.
