Valentines Cards

A lovely gift through the letterbox

Valentine’s Day. Arguably, what we think of as the most romantic day of the year. But its origins are actually shrouded in a lot of mystery. No one quite knows how it became one of the most popular celebrations in the year.

There are theories, as there always are, about how it became the celebration of love. We celebrate it as the day of St Valentine, but there were actually three people that could be this Saint. The Catholic Church recognised them as being named either Valentine or Valentinus, and they were all martyred. The first was a priest who served during third century Rome when Emperor Claudius II made the decision that single men made better soldiers than married men with families. So, Claudius II outlawed marriage for young men. The priest Valentine saw that the decree was unjust, so continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret, defying Claudius’ ruling. When his actions were discovered, he was put to death on the orders of Claudius. However, others insist that it was, was Saint Valentine of Terni, a bishop, who Valentine’s Day was actually named after. He was also beheaded by Claudius II.

The third Valentine in was possibly killed for attempting to help Christians escape Roman prisons, where they were beaten and tortured. It’s also thought that he sent the first “valentine” greeting. It’s thought that he fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his imprisonment and before his death, it’s claimed he wrote her a letter and signed it “From your Valentine”. This is where we think the expression that is still used today comes from.

Another theory behind why Valentine’s Day is celebrated is that it was placed in the middle of February to ‘Christianise’ the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. This pagan festival surrounded fertility, dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as Romulus and Remus. There were rituals performed, and it was supposed to help women fall pregnant, as well as to encourage a good crop yield for the year to come. One of the rituals, according to legend, was that the young women in the city of Rome would place their names in a giant urn. The single men would each choose a name, which would pair them with their chosen woman for the year, and quite often these pairings ended up in marriage.

Enough history for now, although it’s interesting in a lot of ways, one question that always plays on our minds. What do we get our other half for Valentine’s Day? There are only so many times we can buy them the same thing. And we want to keep some mystery and romance alive, so it’s great when we can send them something unique and original.

And we can’t always be with our partners on Valentine’s Day, for various reasons, so it would be good if there was still a way to send them something to let them know you care. The perfect gift should go through the letterbox so that you don’t have to worry about them being out of the house if there’s a delivery on the way. As it’s posted straight through the letterbox, their gift will be waiting for them when they get home.

We think something that we can all agree on, that you are likely to send them, to keep the tradition alive, is a Valentine’s card. Whether you go for a romantic card or a funny card, you know what your partner likes. But, wouldn’t it be nice to send them a Valentine’s card with a difference?
