Everyone has a birthday, whether or not we celebrate them is up to us but we all have them to pin point moments in our lives. We haven’t always been able to celebrate birthday’s though, before the invention of the calendar it was difficult to keep track of days and months, only being able to keep track of the concept of time by the phases of the sun and the moon.
It wasn’t until the Egyptian Pharo’s in around 3,000 B.C.E that the first record of a birthday came about, and was used to mark a Pharo’s birth as a God. And Birthdays at this time were used as a form of protection rather than a celebration. They believed that these “birth” days welcomed evil spirits into the world. So, like other pagan cultures, they lit candles to ward off these spirits as they represented a light in the darkness.
The first record in history of the birth of non-religious figures was in Rome, and Roman citizens would celebrate their friends a family’s birthdays. So, the Romans got the party started on birthdays.
There’s actually quite a lot of history recorded around birthday’s we could go on for a while about it, but we’ll keep the history facts short and sweet.
